Abstract

Çalışmada Pertev Naili Boratav’ın Zaman Zaman İçinde adlı eserinden seçilen dört masal tekerlemesi, Adelheid Uzunoğlu-Ocherbauer’in Almanca insan çevirileriyle karşılaştırılmıştır.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to examine the limitations of artificial intelligence-supported translation tools in literary translation through a comparative analysis of fairy tale formulaic expressions. Today, tools such as Google Translate, DeepL, and ChatGPT provide fast and fluent translation outputs for various text types. However, in literary texts, translation cannot be limited to the transfer of lexical meaning alone. Elements such as form, rhythm, rhyme, cultural connotation, oral narrative function, and aesthetic effect also play a decisive role. For this reason, the performance of AI-supported translation tools becomes particularly debatable in the translation of literary and orally transmitted texts. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Kloepfer’s understanding of literary translation as a creative act of reconstruction and Levy’s approach, which emphasizes comprehension, interpretation, and artistic reformulation of the source text in the target language. In this context, four fairy tale formulaic expressions selected from Pertev Naili Boratav’s Zaman Zaman İçinde are analyzed comparatively. Adelheid Uzunoğlu-Ocherbauer’s German human translations are taken as the main reference point, while the same texts are translated into German through Google Translate, DeepL, and ChatGPT. The translations are evaluated according to four criteria: meaning, function, form/rhythm/rhyme, and aesthetic effect. The findings show that Google Translate and DeepL generally focus on semantic transfer but fail to adequately preserve rhythm, rhyme, repetition, and the oral narrative effect. ChatGPT appears more capable of producing formal and aesthetic effects; however, it may also generate semantic shifts and additions not found in the source text. The study concludes that, in literary structures such as fairy tale formulaic expressions where form and function are closely intertwined, the interpretive and creative role of the human translator remains essential.
