Abstract

Zen estetiğinin asimetri, sadelik ve sükûnet ilkeleriyle birleşen "yohaku no bi" (boşluğun güzelliği) anlayışının seramik yüzeylerdeki yansımaları, boşluğun anlam üretim sürecine dâhil eden gücünü somutlaştırmaktadır.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines, within a philosophical and artistic framework, how the concept of Ma, central to Japanese aesthetics, transforms the use of emptiness and negative space in contemporary ceramic art. Emptiness, long viewed in art history as the point where form ends or as a deficiency, is redefined with the philosophy of Ma as an active potential space where relationships between objects are established, meaning blossoms, and experience deepens. The research emphasizes that emptiness is a temporal and perceptual threshold, and through Martin Heidegger's analysis of pottery, it reveals that the existential essence of form lies in the emptiness that limits it. Analyses of works by artists such as Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye, Metin Ertürk, En Iwamura, Taizo Kuroda and Jennifer Lee demonstrate that emptiness is a strategic component that shapes form and governs the experiential relationship with the viewer. The reflections of the "yohaku no bi" (beauty of emptiness) concept, combined with the principles of asymmetry, simplicity, and tranquility of Zen aesthetics, on ceramic surfaces embody the power of emptiness to incorporate it into the meaning making process. In conclusion, this study aims to fill a conceptual gap in the literature by offering an interdisciplinary perspective on the relationship between form and space in ceramic art.
